Your first visit at Howell & Kidd is free. Please bring any questions you have.
For an initial visit on bankruptcy, you will be provided a questionnaire requesting certain information and documentation.
For an initial visit on immigration, family law, estate planning/probate or elder law, you should bring any documents you already have in your possession.
If you have already been to family court, please bring a copy of your file. If you currently have wills, powers of attorney, etc., please bring those with you.
We want to be as helpful as possible on your first visit. It is very important you be comfortable with your attorney, and that is usually determined on your first visit.

When you need us, we’ll be there to guide you through all your legal matters.
Whether you have mobility issues that require us to come to you, or scheduling difficulties that create a need for an early morning or after hour appointment, we’ll work with you. If you have any questions, please feel free to call our office to discuss.
(1) MAKE SURE YOU HAVE COPIES OF THE LAST FIVE (5) YEARS OF TAX RETURNS AND ALL ACCOUNT STATEMENTS, INCLUDING BANK, RETIREMENT, STOCKS, ETC.
(2) TRY AND SAVE AS MUCH MONEY AS POSSIBLE IN A SAFE PLACE AS YOUR EMERGENCY FUND.
(3) TAKE PHOTOGRAPHS OR VIDEOS OF ALL ITEMS OF VALUE IN YOUR HOUSE.
(4) IF YOU HAVE CHILDREN, BRING DOCUMENTATION TO YOUR ATTORNEY DOCUMENTING THE COST OF WORK-RELATED DAY CARE AND HEALTH INSURANCE FOR THE CHILD(REN).
(5) WHEN MEETING WITH THE ATTORNEY, BRING A LIST OF QUESTIONS. ASK WHAT TO EXPECT OF THE PROCESS—COSTS, TIMING, ETC. NO ATTORNEY CAN GUARANTEE A RESULT—IF AN ATTORNEY GUARANTEES YOU A FAVORABLE RESULT, RUN!
(6) NO ATTORNEY CAN DO A DIVORCE ON A CONTINGENCY FEE SUCH AS PERSONAL INJURY ATTORNEYS DO.
(7) NO ATTORNEY SHOULD REPRESENT BOTH A HUSBAND AND A WIFE IN A DIVORCE.
(8) MAKE SURE YOU UNDERSTAND HOW THE ATTORNEY BILLS HIS/HER TIME.
(9) HAVE REASONABLE EXPECTATIONS GOING INTO THE DIVORCE: NO ONE BECOMES WEALTHIER AFTER A DIVORCE!!!
(10) ASK ABOUT THE FAMILY COURT JUDGE WHO WILL BE PRESIDING OVER YOUR CASE—IT IS ALWAYS IMPORTANT TO KNOW HIS/HER BACKGROUND ON THE BENCH.
(11) ABOVE ALL ELSE, BE TOTALLY HONEST WITH YOUR ATTORNEY—THE WORST THING THAT CAN HAPPEN IS YOUR ATTORNEY FINDS OUT A SURPRISE ABOUT YOU IN THE COURTROOM, WHICH MIGHT AFFECT THE OUTCOME OF THE CASE!
